Are You Prepared for When the Earth Shakes?

Alisha Jackson - Sep 17, 2020 2:16:12 PM

There are a lot of things going on in the world right now, like the coronavirus pandemic, protests and wildfires, but Mother Nature doesn't stop there. Earthquakes happen in the Pacific Northwest, actually at a frequency of 15-20 earthquakes, that are felt, each year.  Since 1970, over 17,000 earthquakes between magnitude 1 and 6 have been recorded in Washington and Oregon alone.  As part of National Preparedness Month, we wanted to help you be prepared for when the earth shakes.  Watch the video below or visit Ready.gov for more information about National Preparedness Month.

Conover recommends the Department of Homeland Security's four step process of preparation:

  1. Make a Plan - Talk to your family and friends about how you will communicate before, during and after a disaster. Make updates as needed as the environment changes.
  2. Build a Kit - Gather supplies that will last for at least several days for every member of your household. Don't forget about medical needs, special care or even your pets!
  3. Prepare for Disasters - Limit the impact of disasters on your home and your family. Know the risks of potential disasters in your area and how you will handle them if they arise. Practice your plan.
  4. Teach Others - Teach your kids and family members about what to do if they get separated, write your plans down and make sure each individual has a copy in their kit!
