Happy friends gardening for the community on a sunny dayGreeting Earthlings on this most glorious Earth Day! Here at Conover we think that this planet we call home is pretty important. We are all about celebrating Earth Day 2019 and doing our part with helping improve the environment. This year is the 49th anniversary of the first-ever Earth Day, which is now observed all over the world. It is truly a global event that connects us all.

Every year chooses a campaign theme to help inspire people to take part in a call of action to help our environment. This year's theme is “Protect our Species.” There are thousands of nature’s creatures and plants considered endangered or threatened, including bees, tigers, elephants, giraffes and coral reefs.

That is why we wanted to share some suggestions we collected on how everyone can help do their part in protecting these species, improving our environment, and ensuring that the beauty and wonder of our amazing planet is here for generations to come. Here are some suggestions of what you can do to help:

  1. Create a bee-friendly garden.
Bees are an endangered species. They are responsible for the pollinating of most of our plants, including produce. As bees have lost their available habitat, the bee population has decreased. Help create more space for the bees by creating a garden they will LOVE! It is probably best to plant flowering plants that are local to your region. Ask your local nurseries. They are sure to have wonderful and safe suggestions.
  2. Plant a tree!
Trees filter out air pollution and create oxygen. They literally help us breathe. It’s always a good time to plant a tree!
  3. Join a local outdoor litter cleanup.Team of young volunteers picking up litter in the park
You may be able to find a local cleanup on sites such as Facebook events, and it would be a wonderful way to meet other environmentally conscious people. If you can’t find one you could always start one.
  4. Reconsider your use of single-use plastics.
Straws, plastic bags, water bottles, and more. All of these things are used once and more than likely thrown away, ending up in landfills or in our oceans. Using paper or reusable straws, cloth grocery bags, and refillable water bottles help keep these items out of the garbage and the mouths of wildlife.
  5. Conserve water.
Water is technically a naturally renewable resource, but it takes a lot of energy to filter it and recycle it for our uses. And the stability of that resource is called to attention many times.  So consider taking shorter showers, running your dishwasher only when it is full, fixing those leaky sinks, and watering your lawn early in the morning or later in the evening.
However you choose to honor the spirit of Earth Day, know that we are right there with you! Planting trees, collecting litter, recycling, and composting. Working together to make this planet better for us all.
